Since 2007, I've been an active player in several LiveJournal-based Role Playing Games (RPGs); in 2012, I added Dreamwidth to that list. Some of my beloved games are dead and gone, some are still active, and some are brand new, but for all I've amassed a rather startling number of characters. This will serve as a master list, so other players (and friends!) will know who the heck I am.

It's my first post of 2014! *fanfare*

I wouldn't get too excited, though; despite battling with an epic Real Life update since the middle of December, I still can't quite figure out where to begin. A lot has happened this winter, and I think I'm still just processing it all. So this is just for fun: some awesome stories I've read lately, that I desperately wanted to share.

1. In Gotham, the night bumps back by blueofthebay: a Galentine's fic about Oracle!Babs Gordon. There are no words for how much I love this, other than perfection. Gosh, hit on my thing for strong female characters why don't you, Laura. It's just incredibly well done.

2. And Let the Future In by ashen_key: Marvel Cinematic Universe/His Dark Materials (daemon AU). While it's a take on what each Avengers' daemon would be, it's also an absolutely brilliant piece about each member of the team, their backgrounds, and their character. The last chapter is my absolute favorite. I adore how Thor is treated in this fic (and the rest of them, for that matter). I just have a lot of feelings and need you to read it so you can have feelings, too.

3. To the End, Against Odds Uncounted by Rosa Lui: a Sarah Rogers / Steve Rogers fic that just dug inside me, pulled out my headcanon, and slapped it on the page. It's so great, you guys. The details make it come alive, it's well-researched, and hot damn did I mention my thing for strong female characters? I love Sarah Rogers, and I love this fic.

Not a fic, but I want to rustle up interest in a community on Dreamwidth called Marvelous Heroines. If you like female Marvel characters, it could use some signal boosting and activity. Particularly if you make things, like awesome fanfics about Marvel ladies. Link, link, link.

And that's all I've got for now. Expect more later, question mark? /pans out to dramatic TO BE CONTINUED music...

Pursuant to this post, The On-line Party of Special Magnificence Otherwise Known as International Debi Day (or Debi Weekend) has now commenced!

Milliways and Mixed Muses posts are now OPEN.

Feel free to toss in placeholders for later if you're not available for srs bsns threading right away. Debi will be off and on the internet all weekend, as will myself. Plotting can and will happen at a time convenient to you. Yes, you!

ladyoflorien: (Artsy: Forever Dreamer)
So you know Debi, right? Of course you do. Everyone knows Debi, because Debi is one awesome lady, and not knowing her is a crime. Well, awesome ladies deserve awesome things.

Those who know and love her as I do are probably aware that, after three glorious years of having her in the USA, she'll be moving back to the UK this fall. This leaves a short window of time for all of us Americans to make our way to New York and give her one last hug before she goes across the pond. Real Life get-togethers are being planned for the lucky, but many of us suffer with busy lives and empty pockets, and can't afford the time or expense of traveling great distances. Recognizing this as the travesty it is, what are we to do?

Ladies and gents, I hereby invite you to the worldwide going away party event of the century, to be held across the weekend of August 2-4, 2013. That's this coming weekend! The best part is you can join whenever your schedule permits, come back as many times as you want, and it won't cost a dime. Many of us have been brought together through RP, and that has led to rich and wonderful friendships. So what better way to honor our dearest Debi than with a giant RP party?

The deets: This is going to be held in both [community profile] milliways_bar and [community profile] mixed_muses, so absolutely anybody and any character is invited, even those we've retired, haven't apped yet, those delightful OCs and AU characters, etc. In Milliways, Porthos is going to be throwing a housewarming party for Dinah Lance, who recently moved to Star City. The set up thread is located here (still in progress, but all pertinent details have already been threaded), and Porthos will be posting an IC invite to the message board shortly. The party is of course entirely opt-in/opt-out. The Mixed Muses post will be hosted by Felicity Smoak, and will be more of a no-holds-barred shindig where anything goes. The posts will go up simultaneously on Friday morning (well, as simultaneously as I can manage), and remain open the entire weekend so those who have work or plans for the weekend can tag in anytime, no RSVP necessary, and slowtimes will be carried on however long the participants want, of course. :)

I've made this a public post so anyone reading can share and link it with your f-lists as well, so that as many of Debi's friends as possible will hear about it and hopefully be able to play. If you don't know Debi, please come play anyway! Meet somebody new and wonderful, and wish her (and Dinah) all the best in their new homes. This isn't a bon voyage, this is a rousing we love you, and welcome home.

The wonderful thing about the internet is we take the people we love with us wherever we go. ♥

In other movie-everybody-has-seen-but-me news, last night I finally saw Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, staring everyone on the planet.
Overall Rating: ★★★☆☆   3 out of 5 stars.
Brief Synopsis: For the fan of Steven Spielberg's sprawling epics, Daniel Day-Lewis takes us through the last four months of Lincoln's life, focusing primarily on the vote for the 13th Amendment. The dialog was the stand-out star of the film, though it was punctuated throughout by Spielberg's love for the melodramatic and moving. Knock-out performances were given by the approximately one million Hollywood actors involved in the project, though they weren't as breathtaking as all the reviews claimed. The music, composed by John Williams (of course), was the runner-up star of the film, managing an unassuming ethereal backdrop and a poignant plot arc of its own. Overall, I was left a little flat if the intent was to move and inspire me, as the majority of Spielberg's work strives for; however, I loved seeing Lincoln through the eyes of his Cabinet, and the humanizing effect the story had on all of these larger-than-life characters.

The Acting: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Tommy Lee Jones, Lee Pace, etc etc. )

Plot and Script: a Writer's Dream )

A few other thoughts on the cinematography, pacing, and overall composition )

Overall, I did like the movie. I wanted to love it, but you win some and you lose some. I think it's worth seeing for the dialog alone, and the wonderful performances given by Field, Spader, and Day-Lewis.

Do you love spectacular photography? Do you love bustling city life? Are you a fan of the simple artistry in New York living? Then won't you please check out Swankyfunk's photography sale, and help support a starving artist and really wonderful all-around person? I have ordered prints from her, and they're even more beautiful in person. A true professional, and a true artist. Please think about buying a print, even if you only have a few dollars to spare. Every little bit helps.

This week, I watched Hitchcock starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, and The Karate Kid.
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Brief synopsis: The movie delves into the height of Hitchcock's genius and madness while writing, adapting, and filming Psycho. While it isn't the broad look at the man I had been expecting, it's a fascinating journey through his creative process, Hollywood of the 1950s, the issues of sexism in the movie business, and his relationship with his wife, Alma. With sumptuous art and costume design, an understated soundtrack, and masterful performances from the cast, it itself was a work of art.

The Performances: Anthony Hopkins at his best )

The Plot: Behind Every Psycho is a Great Woman (tagline) )

Direction, cinematography, editing, design, music, and so on )

Happy Friday!

I made a #FicFriday suggestion once upon a time before Texas that was met with some interest. That suggestion was to branch Fic Friday out to both Dreamwidth/LiveJournal. Today is the day I initiate that suggestion. Finally. *shifty eyes*

The same basic Twitter rules apply here - leave prompts in the comment section for fics you'd like me to write; they can be anything, anything at all! If you're participating as well, link me to the post where you're accepting prompts so I can return the favor. Since there is no 140 character limit here, the technical limit is whatever will fit in a comment. (I say technical because that's a pretty big character limit, and the point of Fic Friday is brevity. However, I am not one to put a leash on anyone's creativity, so it's totally up to you where you want to stop.)

Prompts will be answered with a fic at least two sentences long, if not longer. Short little bite-sized fics to brighten up your Friday! You can request as many fics as you want, since it gives my shriveled brain more exercise. Requests stay open however long people want them, I'm not picky.

(This is also my first attempt at a prompts post, so if I'm doin it rong, leave me suggestions for next week.)

Come write with me!

They say the mind is a faucet: creativity doesn't come pouring out until you turn it on.

It's easier for some than it is for others. The axiom is simple: you can't write unless you first start to write. Words won't magically appear on the page. Yet, for how strongly the writing world tries to decry writer's block as hokum, a self-created fear that only you can manipulate, it doesn't change the fact that oftentimes writing is hard. You can't turn on your creativity, there is no magical switch to your imagination, and no matter how many words you type you still feel stuck, hammering the backspace key until you feel perpetually in reverse. That's when the axiom becomes a diatribe, and the author is lost to despair or anger (or both - or binge eating). There are oodles of advertised "fixes" for this problem, most of which follow the same basic formula of just write something. Anything. It doesn't matter what. Turn the faucet on.

Now, I'm not going to yammer on like some advice column with a magical fix, because there is no magical fix (except written kitten, naturally). The point of all this is to talk about my favorite new writing exercise: 140 Character Fic, or Twitter Fic.

***SPOILERS: FEW, MOSTLY BROAD DETAILS. IF SPOILERS AND HILARITY ARE YOUR THING, I RECOMMEND Thorin Dreamboatshield: An Unexpected Hotness of Dwarves***

I'm warning you at the outset that this will primarily be a review of the new HFR;RPX technology, the actor's performances, and other filmmaking thoughts of this ilk more so than story line or plot, so if you're not in the mood for cinematography babble you might want to mosey on by.

48FPS? But what does it MEAN? )

All right, you've blithered on about filmmaking long enough, now what about the actual movie? )

Now, about Martin whats-his-name and Richard Dreamboatenshield (and the rest)... )

I can't really give the film a star rating, as I feel so much of my experience was influenced by the 3D HFR;RPX. It's too hard to disambiguate the two. I will say, however, that I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing it on DVD, and at the very least it's a solid 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

In the grand scheme of things Jackson/Tolkien related, I would say, in order from favorite to least favorite, it falls thusly: 1) The Two Towers; 2) Fellowship of the Ring; 3) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; 4) Return of the King.

Hello my dears!

When do I not start a post by apologizing about not yet getting around to writing about all the things I've promised to get around to writing? So that isn't what this first paragraph's about. No, really. (*shifty* But I do have a few posts that've been brewing in my head for a while.) Instead, I'm just going to hop right into it.

This is indeed one of those Signal Boosting posts, otherwise known as Hey, Anybody Out There Want To Buy Some Awesome Stuff? In brief, you all know Li, right?... )

Thanks for listening to me. ♥
ladyoflorien: (Introspective: FF Still Flying)
So, ever since I first got a Twitter account (uh, a year ago >_>) I've wanted to try an idea. 140 character fics. I'm always looking for interesting new writing exercises, and I thought it would also be a fun and useful way of utilizing Twitter to send something more positive out into the ether than just, "I'm having fruit loops for breakfast!" Also, because I love alliterations, I was thinking of doing it as a weekly thing every Friday. I never use the #FF hashtag, so why not reassign it? #FicFriday #140CharFic

Long story short, I tossed the idea out to my feed yesterday (yes I know, Monday/Tuesday, not Friday, but people were having tough Mondays and I thought they could use a little cheer!), and it was met with a lot of positivity. I think I'm going to make it a thing from now on, and if you guys want to jump on it as well, all I can say is go for it.

Here are my filled requests:

BBC Robin Hood, Guy/Marian, for Rachel:
"He wanted to believe he could be different; he wanted to believe she could love him, even if he remained exactly the same."

Hell on Wheels, Lily/Robert, for Laura:
"But it wasn't until after the lecture, when he looked at her with eyes as pregnant as his Kansas thunderstorms, that she knew."

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Brisco/Dixie, for Missy:
"She's the fire in his bones, and he's the steady man she never did have. Together they reckon they're something akin to whole."

Milliways 'verse, Maid Marian-Lily Bell, for Amanda:
"She has a home to rebuild, a sure place in a troubled world. But so does Lily. A missing roof of hope, & faith in progress."

Once Upon a Time, Graham/Regina, for Jen:
"It's been forty years since she's seen him cry. Now as he shudders, pushing her back, he's unaware that there is one heart aching."

Milliways 'verse, Charles Xavier-Queen Regina (Mills), for Fi:
"He can feel it, even rooms away from the main bar. The echo, the humming. He clutches his head, and knows. The Queen is here."

As you can see, it's fairly simple (though, holy COW some of the fics you guys have written me in return = CHILLS), and so far I've been including the @ names. Which would technically make these less-than-140-character fics. So far, my only rule is to have a "0" on spare letters by the time I'm finished. But, guys? It's really, really fun.

Feel free to spread this around! #FF
