One thing I mean to do with playing Ben again is get rid of the old habit I had of trying to type out his accent. Reading newer issues, Marvel doesn't bother with it any more, so I don't see why I should. Especially since I was always worried it was awkward to read.

I'd like to offer my own apologies for disappearing the past couple of weeks. I think Danny and Selina are the ones I've left things hanging and I hope you're good with me tagging in and continuing. If not, that's fine and thank for what we've got done. = )

I'm going to let Touji go. Chance as well. I thought both would be fun, but Chance's isn't being that loud and I already have spunky teens that are louder (Ahsoka, Selina, and Sabine), and with Touji, I'm just not having the urge to play him as well as having the problem of truly groking his culture and magic system. It seems easy on the surface, but something just isn't clicking.

I do mean to bring Ben Grimm back to Milliways...finally. News of the possible beginning of the return of the F4 to the comics landscape has woken him something fierce. I plan on starting with his time in the Guardians of the Galaxy and slowly moving forward until December when the search for Reed, Sue, and the kids starts. Very likely to stick with allusions to things happening in his life rather than doing OOMs. I just don't seem to have the time for them.

I think I need to through Tybalt (Toby Daye) and Yang (RWBY) into a sandbox to give them some play before I decide if I want to play them. I keep being tempted by both since they have new canon out or soon to be out.

Ehren and Elayne are still there. I'm waffling on Elarne. I love the world, but I'm not sure I understand it well enough. Ehren I am still having trouble deciding on a PB as well as a canon point to began play from.

I'm learning more and more that character and personality are more important to me for playing in Milliways than a cool world or powers.

OK, work and then maybe some playing or writing. I still need to get back to my Trucker Quest.

My apologies for dropping off the face of the Bar for a while there. I've been busy RL- not a great excuse, I know- and I've been making jewelry as a hobby/small business lately. Which doesn't sound like it'd interfere, but man, have you tried typing with a pair of roundnose pliers in one hand and four 18-gauge dead soft wires in the other? It is not an easy experience.

... anyway. I'm sorry to have vanished for a while, and would like to get back into posting properly if anyone is still interested.

Thanks.

Your character is about to start some new project, a new beginning--a big move, a new job, a new relationship. Is there anything they'd like to clear up from their "old life?" Mistakes they'd like to fix, misunderstandings to settle, bad habits they'd like to kick, good habits they'd like to start? What do they do?

Went with [profile] wickedtrue and [personal profile] vivien to watch the Vegas Golden Knights in their inaugural game, which happened to be against the Colorado Avalanche.

Looks like the Golden Knights are going to have a solid team. And it also looks like the Avalanche still have a lot of work to do if they ever want to get back to the glory days of 1995-2001.

Confession time: I had been kind of almost sorta hoping Jose would be a little stronger this morning so I could work from home. I am aware, yes, that even if the storm had been stronger, my area would not have born the brunt of it and other people whose livelihoods and homes depend on the ocean's weather not killing them would have been badly hurt. I am also aware that I used to work for the Red Cross and would feel obligated to join one of the local chapters in any relief efforts to this area should such a storm strike occur even though I haven't been a member in years.

Every so often there are areas in which I cannot help but consider myself a little bit of a terrible human being, and rooting for extreme weather even though I know I am not the one who is going to pay the consequences is one of those areas, and I am very sorry.

This is going up rather late, for which I apologize; just got off a flight. I almost did a travel question, this one occurred to me instead.

Does your character visit their family--whether genetic, formally adopted, informally adopted/just chosen and assembled like half our large-cast-protagonist stories are--often? (If they live with their family, assume holidays/important celebrations at or with visiting family.) How do those visits go, what are they like? Does your character enjoy them?

And for those characters who don't have family, do they wish they did or are they relieved to be spared the... let's call them 'complications' that can go with it?

these are musical musings, of a sort

Forgive me for a second, folks. Chanter's going to ramble about Broadway.

So, the mayor/storyteller/one of the primary narrators in Come From Away intrigued me from almost the moment I heard his voice and his lines. As information for those who haven't heard the soundtrack, and I'm trying to avoid the heck out of spoilers here, there are multiple people describing events in Gander as they happen during the show, some openly timestamped, some not. We get perspectives from both local folks and plane people throughout - that's the whole framework of the musical - but as true narration goes, it's the Ganderites who get the timestamped snippets. There's a newbie reporter, two or three different schoolteachers whose time references are less to-the-minute but still important, at least one man whose name is never revealed, and the town's mayor. It's that last who also, and again I won't spoil without employing a cut tag, proves himself quite the spoken word storyteller in the course of the play. Aaaaand of course, my interest was well and truly snagged when he did so.

Oh, and just to be clear, I'm musing about the character in the musical here, not the real man or the actor who plays him, neither of whom I'm going to name.

Probably inaccurate daydreaming and shameless elaboration under the cut. Here there be mild but present Come From Away spoilers! )

After I wrote the lion's share of this down, I found a very recent article talking about the real people who inspired this musical. There was a quote in there from the real man, the actual mayor, and though I won't muse about him, it is a little eerie just how easily what he said about religion and skin color not mattering when people are in need could have come out of the musical version of the man's mouth, or the storyteller's as I imagine him. If somehow I've gotten his appearance right, I... Part of me wants to know, and part of me does oh so very not. I got close with his age, which is eerie enough; the article gave it as of 2017, and if you backdate to 2001, it's right on. Creepy! I definitely don't want to know if I've somehow got the actor's description - no thanks.

A little further daydreaming. Wherein Chanter is obvious. )

Do I need a Broadway tag? Or a 'Chanter has issues' tag? ... A maple leaves and warm fuzzies tag? Ah frak.

Many of you know this already through other channels, but since I haven't said it here yet --

My father passed away due to complications from heart failure on August 25, 2017. I am very fortunate that I was able to be there with him when the time came, as was my mother; he didn't leave this world alone.

Since my mother was in ICU at the same time (in the same hospital, at least) and is still recovering, plus a few other things, we will be holding a memorial service for him sometime in November. That's what he wanted, anyway, rather than a big funeral shindig, so.

By then I will have better words to share here in his memory. For now -- I loved him very much, and he loved me. Even when we disagreed on things, that was always a constant. I am grateful to have had him in my life for as long as I did, and I will miss him always.

(Before you ask - no, I'm not okay, not really, but I'm getting through it one moment at a time. All of you have been a great help.)

Sweet, shy Steve Rogers had had it! He now held the dubious title of oldest unmarried man in Oakdale — and a virgin, to boot. It was high time he shed his scholarly shell and unleashed the temptor within. Problem was, he didn't know the first thing about men, let alone seducing one….

Heartbreaker Bucky Barnes had been away for twelve years, and boy, had things changed! The innocent boy who once had tutored him in math now was a man in need of his help… to snare a man! He'd always admired Steve, but his stunning transformation was too much for any man to resist — even a sworn bachelor like him...

Notes spin the dial:

*Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) has its studios in Hilversum, Holland. There really are windows everywhere in that building.

*This crowd are speaking both Dutch and English. Translations:

Vreemde: Weird!

Iedereen y uitgepraat: Literally 'everybody stop talking'. Everybody be quiet!

*A large majority of the people at this meeting have analogs in local reality, though I've left all but one unnamed. There are lots and lots of appreciative nods to RNW staff here, though.

*The island of Saint Kitt's does, or at least has, broadcast on 555kHz at relatively low power.

*Rochester, New York's WHAM really is on 1180kHz.

*Watrous, Saskatchewan and Fort Madison, Iowa do both broadcast on 540kHz. Iowa is much more commonly heard in northern North America, but occasionally, Sask gets through too.

*Summer in North America is not a good time to be listening to lower-frequency stations; there is static of various sorts everywhere.

*1000kHz is the frequency used by Chicago's WMVP, a very strong sports talk station indeed.

*The States and Canada space their radio stations 10kHz apart. Europe, parts of if not the entire continent of Africa, the Middle East, and India all use 9kHz steps instead.

*1440kHz really is known as a graveyard frequency. There isn't much audible on it in the northern U.S. to the casual listener. Further south, signals are stronger.

*RNW has, or has had, language services in English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Bahasa (Indonesia, not Malayu). Whether or not half the Bahasa service has ever been felled by the flu, I don't know!

I've started watching season 03 of Gotham and I have to say, once you let go of the grounded feel of season 01 and accept the show is heading into comic book science, it's much better. They still make some questionable calls (*cough* aging up a 14 year old Ivy to have another femme fatale *cough*) but it's good cheesy fun.

Oh, and I finished Thrawn yesterday and started Rogue One this morning. Thrawn was amazing and I highly recommend it. I am likley one of the very few people who didn't get much from Heir to the Empire, and Thrawn didn't strike me as all that, but this book really sold him to me.

Also, Governor Pryce is an awful person. If her willing to torture a teenaged girl (Sabine in season 03) wasn't enough evidence, this book really makes it obvious, especially the last battle of the book.

And I squeed anytime a mention was made that tied into Star Wars Rebels.

I hope we hear more about Eli Vanto in the future.
