Just a few goodies before I go...
1. Tried a Sauce Stuffed Crust pizza for the first time tonight. I LIKE!
2. Can anyone get me "Don't Worry, Be Happy" done Futurama style? because HA!
3. Found the coolest site tonight! The Nine Companions. With an AWESOME sounds page that had me BUSTING UP laughing. Balrog sounds: Description of sound clip: "RAAAAAWWWGG!!!" Bwahahaha.
4. 24 was good tonight. Can't wait for next week!
5. My Theme For The Day:
"If there is a voice inside of you saying 'you can't paint,' then by all means paint! And the voice within you will be silenced."--Vincent Van Gough
And finally...
6.
Well, you all already know that I find it extremely moving, which it is. Very few songs have power over my tears, but this one played me like a harp. I really honestly think this song has the guts and beauty to stand a good chance against other contenders for academy honors.
But what I want to focus on here is the amazing hope I hear in it. So far all my friends page can talk about is how depressing it is. How it bears down on their mind that this is the end. This is it. No more. And it makes them sad for the years past where we couldn't wait for another year to pass, because we always had something to look forward to. Am I the only one that catches the hidden inflections in this song? Sure, when I went to click on it I had the same nervous thoughts - that this was the last of it all. But instead of "Into The West" reinforcing that thought, or making me sad or bitter, it drove away all my sadness and doubt with such new hope and reassurance. I derived such an incredible amount encouragement and nostalgia (the good kind--no, the great kind) from my very first listening that by the end of it I had a huge grin on my face while tears brimmed in my eyes.
Don't think about the end when you're listening to this song - it's supposed to make you feel the exact opposite.
Don't say,
"We have come now to the end."
White shores are calling
you and I will meet again.
There's more to come. Oh yes. This may be the last of all the "newness" and "expectation" that envelopes the whole LOTR phenomenon, but in another few months we'll be expectantly awaiting the RotK DVD and all it's deleted scenes. And after that, then we've got years ahead to watch and rediscover new bits and pieces that we might not have caught before. To have crazy all day marathons when we're sick, one four-hour extended version after another after another, on sleepy cold winter days when we never change out of our pajamas and lay on the couch all day giggling and squee-ing and sniffling, hot cocoa in our hands and a fire roaring at our feet. And after that we'll have a new phenomenon catch our attention, be it fantasy or sci fi or some other wonderful fictional world that sweeps us off our feet and we can't wait to find out what happens next.
Sleep now,
and dream of the ones who came before.
They are calling
from across the distant shore.
We'll always have the memories of scenes and characters and places dancing in our heads, finding us when we least expect them to. The next time we're forced into a boring conference at work or a long monotone speech in school, where will you go? Will you visit Lothlorien or Rivendell? Perhaps peek in on the long glorious reign of Aragorn in Gondor, or visit days past in Rohan? Will you be found sneaking through the forests of Mirkwood or Fangorn, or perhaps are you preparing to set sail from the Grey Havens or the Great River to the mouth of the sea? Where will you be called? Who's voice will be found ringing in your ears? Where in middle earth will your footsteps fall?
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
all of your fears will pass away,
safe in my arms
you're only sleeping.
Will you hear the clear ringing of the silver trumpets of Gondor in your ears while you sleep? Will you be brought near to the White Tower, it's banners caught high in the morning breeze? Will you feel the solidity of a glorious steed against your thighs, his beautiful flowing mane sweeping across your cheek? Will you walk in great halls and converse with the kings of old? You're only dreaming, child. Will the memory of cool, sweet, good lands cradle your head in the dark of night? How many new things will you discover in your dreams? Why do you weep, when you have such beautiful visions guarding your minds eye?
What can you see
on the horizon?
What DO you see? Are there new journeys and adventures awaiting you? Familiar faces waiting to sweep you away into another time and place? Are there white gulls calling on the far off horizon, bidding you come home, come remember, come create? Are there old friends awaiting you in the future? New places, or familiar steads? Do you choose to see the end looming near, or do you see a brave new world of new discoveries pressing in on you?
Across the sea
a pale moon rises --
The ships have come to carry you home.
And all will turn
to silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the west.
Will you turn away to remember the bitterness of the end, or will you let the beauty of it all sweep you aboard the grey ships and back to the lands of your dreams? How many more places and peoples and tongues exist in your head? How long will it be before you exhaust all your visions and dreams and desires? Will you stretch on for forever, until every dream and wish is spent? Or will you choose to walk, albeit a short time, barefoot in the cool grasses of Lorien, finding new wonders and dreams and thoughts with each step you take?
It's not the end. It's only the beginning. The trick is for you to realize it.
Tomorrow I am SO watching TTT:EE. SO watching it. But for now, I sleep.
