Fanfic ramblings.
Writing fanfic should NOT be this hard. Geh.
So I discovered a Dom and Billy short story I started AGES ago and then completely forgot about. I'm thinking I'm gonna work on that, finish it, and post it here when I'm done to sort of stretch my fingers a bit and get a feel for Dom's character. Somewhat like an experiment of sorts, to see whether I can in fact write Dom before I start out on this long novel I have in mind. The two are completely different genres---the short story is sort of like a comedy/fantasy drabble, the "novel" for lack of a better term is more like a... self-discovery romance type dealy? I don't know, I have reservations about it yet, but none the less I think it would be a good idea to get inside this man's head a bit and get a feel for what makes him tick before I start on a whole story about him.
So I'm definitely finishing the short fic, there's no question about that, it's the "novel" I'm mostly worried about. The idea for it was born shortly after I read the Premier Magazine article in full (on top of that horrid experience he had in LA), and while I love playing around with it in my head I don't know how it's going to work on paper. Remember that poll I had you guys comment on? Well ya'll gave me some good opinions, but shortly after this I realized---this fic HAS NO ENDING! It's driving me batty. Because there's a hundred different ways it could go, and I have no idea how to end it. afjkafjkafjkafjkafjk...
Basically I want it to fit with his real life. Tell a story about him. Make it look like "a day in the life of Dom," so to speak. Which rules out my two favorite genres: Fantasy and Sci-Fi. In fact it doesn't leave a whole lot to choose from at all, so I have two basic choices. Comedy and Romance. Frankly I suck at both (having never experienced romance myself and not being all that funny), because they're not really "thrilling" stories, you know? Trying to figure out where to throw in the element of surprise and a few dramatic pauses here and there without making the story seem unrealistically stupid or marysue-ish is difficult to say the least. I've got this... idea, which I think if executed properly will really really rock and make the story completely unique, but I'm afraid it'll end up too fangirl-ish. It's sort of an exhausting seesaw of wills I have going on right now; I don't want to write romance, because no matter how I do it I feel like I'm a trashy romance novelist (granted half the fanfic community seems to hold romance fiction as their favorite, so I probably wouldn't be lacking in audience). But I don't want to drop the story altogether because it's a rather exciting idea and I think if nursed properly it could be a Dom fic to make the community proud. But can I really do it? And would anyone really read it?
*sigh* I guess what I'm trying to say is, what do you think?! 'Cause frankly, I'm just running myself around in circles.
I think I'm going to go back to reading the MCs now. *sigh*
