I adore this boy. Honestly. What a great choice in pets. I just.... Gizmo! This is getting written into my story, yo. I adore him so much now.
Okay. Premise? What does it feel like to go from being a low-profile TV actor in Britain to being one of the main characters in this era's most talked about blockbuster? To move away from family and friends and a place and lifestyle you're accustomed to, to L.A.? L.A. Possibly the most depressing place in this entire plastic world. You're not a barbie doll, you're not perfect, and you're not quite big-name movie star yet. So what are you? You're removed, you're alone, and you're completely immersed in a culture you don't quite understand. It's angst fic, because, well, pretty much EVERYTHING I write is angst fic. :P But it's also something deeper, something different. Something extraordinary and mysterious. Baffling, intriguing, confusing, yet magical. This is a story about Dom, not about Dom's life, his sexuality, his career, or his peers. No, they all contribute, but in the end all this boils down to is Dom. Who he is, why he is, and most importantly where he is mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Sound interesting? God I hope so. But I'm floundering on the time-line and character development. I got some good reviews from the few that read "The Tree Whisperer," but they were still few in number and my confidence is still patchy. I think I've got a feel for how he interacts with his friends and how he would speak, but my fingers still can't quite form a grip on who he is. I originally thought the story would take place in 2001, when he first moved to the city. But I find my grasp on events and when they actually took place is light to say the least -- I know certain things about Dom I want to write into my story, but I have no fathomable clue on when they actually took place. So I'm beginning to think writing it as if it were happening now would be better, but I'm not sure if it will uproot my original plot idea of self-discovery in a bold new world. It's been over 2 years since he moved to the States, can I still make the small-talk Brit in him stand out convincingly amidst the rock-star wardrobe and Hollywood looks? I'm not sure. I just really really REALLY wish I had a Dom fan to help me beta this, damn it. I found some great resources - A LOTR time-line (very extensive), a british slang dictionary, some good Dom websites and articles - but I'm still missing a BETA person, and that's the most important missing piece in my eyes.
So my normal first reaction is to write a test-chapter kind of outlining my ideas and see what the general reaction is before I continue. The only problem is I don't have much by way of audience. Backstreet Boys reap in tons of readers, and LOTR slash has a huge fan-base, but there's not many people who care about Dom, especially in het form, to give me the time of day. So I really don't know what to do. Something's telling me to just write this story for ME and no one else, but I tend to work better knowing I have other people's expectations to amount to. Writing for myself only will probably kill the fic, because I'll get too lazy or disenchanted to finish it. So I don't know. I don't know I don't know. I just wish I had some HELP here, but as far as I can see it's not going to happen.
I think I'm just going to start writing and see where my fingers lead me.
From
dramabsb's Journal:
This week on PBS, three episodes of season five of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates will air. I think that's the season of the NakedAss!Dom. So, yeah. Dom's butt might be on PBS this week. My TV book doesn't list it. Damn.
... WHOOOO! Okay I'm good. I better check to make sure we get PBS now.
NOTE:
If anybody wants an awesome drawing - character, portrait, etc.,
gypsyjr could really use some business right now (Stupid darn expensive college tuitions and books).

But write for yourself. If others read it and enjoy it, that's a bonus.
Suggestion (take or leave as you will): set it in the present and if you want to mention something in the past, go ahead. The exact day it happened doesn't matter. Just mention it if you feel it should be. Chronology is not the most important thing.
Anywho...
