Gooooodies!
Dudes. Four years ago today they released "Return of the King" in theaters. Where does time go? In honor of this auspicious day (suspicious? what day is it?), check it out: How We Became Middle Earth, yet another book! This one about NZ meets Middle Earth.
*wibbles* Whedon, Minear Creative Screenwriting Expo DVDs on sale for $12.95. I... I want! *pouts dramatically* DANG IT I HATE BEING POOR! I really want this.
Note to self: stop forgetting to buy Serenity comics, because new ones are being released and the longer you wait the more money you'll pay. Also to be released, "A Shepherd's Tale" comic featuring Book. Wheee, we get some *spoilerific* BACKSTORY on Book! Finally! I WISH THERE WAS GOING TO BE MORE FIREFLY, STUPID FOX NETWORKS! *shakes fist*
Oh, I am so all about THIS ACTION! Star Trek the tour?!?! I'm so hitting this sucker when it comes to NC. "THE TOUR will provide a unique opportunity to experience Star Trek up close and personal with sets, props and models, motion-simulator rides, merchandise and more all under one very large roof." Wheee!
Japanese Exercise Video/Language class? This... this... this is about the funniest thing I've seen in YEARS. No exaggeration. I laughed until there were tears - it's been a while since I've done that. The phrases they're reciting are so serious and ... they're doing AEROBICS?! *dies* WATCH THIS VIDEO.
50 Nerdy Things to do Before You Die. Some of these are pretty clever/hysterical. My favorite has to be #25.
I automatically endorse any comic that can make a respectable Pee Wee Herman joke. Such brilliance.
How many people have seen the new BSB music video for Helpless When She Smiles? I'm almost embarrassed to post this here. This video is so bad it's led me to declare the Boys just aren't even trying anymore. Aw what the hell, how about a black and white video filmed with a random emo girl out in the middle of nowhere? That sounds new and original. *shakes head* Like a bad Calvin Kline commercial. And I have to say I am rather annoyed that they chose this song to be their next single. Out of all the other perfectly respectable songs on their new album, they chose the freakin' rehashed syrupy overdone BALLAD. BOYS, DO I HAVE TO COME BEAT YOU?! WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU THINKING?!?! *pinches bridge of nose* Worst choice for a single EVER.
In case you haven't seen it already, The trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The trailer begins playing immediately. And also, screen-captures! May 16th!!! Wheeeee!
Also, I would like to preface this link by saying I in no way endorse this movie: Trailer for The Dark Knight. Posted because you have to watch/listen to Heath Ledger's Joker and think to yourself: "...the hell just happened?!" o_O *twitch*
So I rented Waitress this weekend. Overall it was a good movie, though there were things I liked about it and things I hated about it. The cinematography and direction simply wasn't very good, which I know is a taboo thing to say since the writer/director was murdered just weeks before its theatrical release. It just wasn't my film style at all, and it bothered me throughout the whole film. Brusque cut-aways and choppy edits, and this predisposition to linger on a frame waaay too long. It was an unfortunate detraction from the film, which on the plus side, was very witty and funny. The plot was okay, nothing too spectacular, but the dialog was absolutely hysterical. I laughed almost throughout the entire thing. Keri Russell did a great job acting, and Nathan Fillion was cute as a button (though very different from his usual "Mal Reynolds" character). Andy Griffith played "Old Joe," the owner of the pie shop Keri Russell's character (Jenna) worked at, and he was a brilliant side character. Very funny and engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialog. One of my favorite lines from the film came after a rather passionate kiss between Jenna and Dr. Pomatter, when Jenna is sitting by herself outside the pie shop daydreaming and Andy Griffith's character walks up and points out that she has lipstick smudged all over her face.
Old Joe: I'm going inside now. Once you're done wiping away all your indiscretions I'll be sitting in my booth, wanting fresh squeezed orange juice [...]
The delivery was fantastic. But I think the best--best--line delivery came from Adrienne Shelly's mousy character (Dawn) trying to convince this odd little man who's been following her around reciting love poems to leave her alone.
Dawn: Listen to me. You make me sick! I think you're nothin' but a crazy little freak and I wish you would go away and die! *people in the diner turn to look at her* *the man starts sobbing* .... Oh I'm sorry, hun.
It was pure dead brilliant. Perfect delivery. But anyway, back on topic. I would really only recommend it if you want a good Nathan Fillion movie to squee over, because the plot itself was nothing to write home about. The way Jenna and Dr. Pomatter get together is sloppy and rushed and, quite frankly, completely unrealistic. She basically attacks him randomly, which is hysterical, but wtf mate? Also, I don't care how crappy your life is sweet-cheeks, committing adultery is just plain wrong. Like Old Joe says, it's beneath you and makes you look like a common hussy and will only end up hurting you and the ones you love. If your life is so terrible then you find a way out of it or a way to make it better, but I just can't bring myself to agree with the theme of the movie which was: affairs are exciting and fun and a necessary means to a happy end! Sorry, they're not. Your script was cute and it made me laugh, but I was not going "Yay Jenna! You and Dr. Pomatter should run away together! You are so MFEO!" *shrug* Just me.
So basically, Nathan Fillion is adorable and is made to be loved. That is my entire review of "Waitress." ;) One of the funniest moments in the movie (aside from the previously mentioned quotes) came from Dr. Pomatter deadpanning: "I have to go to St. Mary's now and deliver a baby. Because that's what I do." So. funny. And if you get the chance I would recommend watching some of the bonus features too, because eee! Nathan Fillion refers to himself as cinnamon & plays with a cute black dog! *explodes with squee* Sorry. I'll shut the fangirl in me up now. I give the movie 4 out of 5 stars.
Hm, I'm slightly relieved. I would have expected it to be more.
Finally, if any of my friends out there are having a crappy day and need a little glee? Click here, and I promise you'll be squeeing. (Warning: many pictures may cause the internetz to explode) :)

That was the best weird movie I've seen in a long time. And it's true. The plot was completely convoluted and bizarre, jumping from one place to another without offering the slightest bit of explanation, making sure it kept you completely baffled for nearly half the film, and it was fantastic. The way everything ended up coming together and turning in on itself so the beginning became the end and the end became the beginning, every tiny sentence, every insignificant prop, suddenly bursting forth with incredible meaning. It was a psychological trip, and I can't help it but hot damn I love allegory and symbolism, of which this movie was chock full. It was so, so beautifully done. I was captivated by the cinematography from the very beginning, and that's what makes or breaks a movie, in my opinion. Outstanding cinematography can redeem a crap script just the same as a great script can redeem crap cinematography. It's the first thing I look for, the first thing I notice, and the first thing I pass judgment on in a film. It was fantastic. Utterly beautiful. The way they played with light and dark, the angles of the camera, the beautiful close-ups and still shots. Ugh. I loved the scene where Tommy was giving Izzi a sponge-bath, simply because of what they did with the cinematography to give poignancy and feeling to the scene. It was beautifully filmed, and it completely sucked you up into Tommy & Izzi's world and made you really feel for the characters. And can we please talk about the metaphors? I LOVE HOW IZZI WAS THE TREE OF LIFE! I mean, I saw it coming, but it was just so cool. Everything he was searching for was right there the whole time. And the way the movie progressed from dark and brooding to fantastically bright, the obvious play on lighting signifying his trek towards understanding and resignation. Go towards the light. It's the one truth people universally practice, even if it takes them a while to realize it. So just yes. Metaphors = awesome. The message I got from the movie was: the things we hold dear to us are our own trees of life, or fountains of youth. We cannot live forever, but if we cherish what we have--our mate, our best friend, our accomplishments, etc--in that way we live forever in memory. We can't stop the world from turning, but we can devour every moment it gives us and not waste the time we have. *nod* Isabel the Queen, Izzi the wife, Izzi the tree. She starts out seeking immortality and finds it in her lover's eyes. When Tommy finally realizes "how it ends," it's such a fantastic admission. "I'm going to die." *shudders*
GREAT movie. Like 4 9/10 out of 5 stars. ;)...
